Explore this magnificent city by cable car or on foot, taking in all the must-see sights from Fisherman's Wharf to Union Square. Cross the Golden Gate Bridge to admire the art galleries in Sausalito. Take a trip to Alcatraz Island and visit Chinatown, where you can ride the cable car. Alternatively, you can spend the day sampling Californian wines in Napa Valley.

Meals at leisure. Overnight stay in San Francisco.

Passing through the fertile farmland around Fresno, the 13-kilometre-long Yosemite Valley is the most beautiful national park you will ever have the pleasure of visiting. With its imposing granite peaks, such as Half Dome and El Capitan, spectacular waterfalls, peaceful mountain lakes and picturesque scenery, it is approximately 315 km away.

Meals at leisure. Overnight stay in Yosemite Valley.

Explore Yosemite National Park by car and on foot. The most famous viewpoint in Yosemite Valley is undoubtedly Tunnel View. Other must-see sites include the magnificent Bridalveil Fall waterfall and the renowned Glacier Point viewpoint, which is open from June to September. In the valley, a short, easy walk will take you to the foot of Yosemite Falls.

Meals at leisure. Overnight stay in Yosemite Valley.

Cross Yosemite National Park via the Tioga Pass route (open seasonally) and drive from Mono Lake to Mammoth Lakes, which is famous for its ski areas at Mammoth Mountain and June Mountain, as well as its hiking trails. The town is the starting point for the Devil's Postpile National Monument, which features basalt columns, and the impressive Rainbow Falls, located around 170 km away.

Zion National Park offers a variety of hiking trails. Admire the desert landscape and immense sculpted rock formations alongside hanging gardens. The strange sandstone formations and, above all, the view from Angels Landing (permit required) are breathtaking. Meals at leisure. Overnight stay in Springdale.

Continue your scenic drive along the US 89 and the Highway 12. Bryce Canyon National Park is a fantastical world of colourful sandstone formations. Sculpted by erosion, the landscape is formed of pillars and other fantastical shapes. Walking in this otherworldly landscape at sunset is particularly rewarding.

Cross the Mojave Desert and visit the ghost town of Calico, located just north of Barstow. Then enter the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles, where Route 66 becomes Santa Monica Boulevard. Winding between Hollywood and Beverly Hills, it eventually intersects with Santa Monica Parkway and the Pacific Ocean, approximately 485 km away.

Meals at leisure. Overnight stay in Los Angeles.

Explore Los Angeles' world-famous neighbourhoods, from the city centre to glamorous Hollywood, home to the Walk of Fame, Beverly Hills and the residences of celebrities. The beaches of Santa Monica, Venice and Malibu are located on the Pacific Ocean. Or visit the exciting Universal Studios.
