Important information about your destination
Customs and traditions
Famous for their warm welcome and love of culture, Mexicans have an innate sense of hospitality that will make you feel right at home. Respect for customs is essential and politeness is a shared value. In rural areas and small towns, traditions often have deep indigenous roots and visitors are encouraged to be respectful, for example by asking before taking photographs and avoiding topics of discussion related to local politics. Music, dance and colourful festivals enliven the streets of towns and villages throughout the year.
Time difference
Mexico has several time zones, but the centre (including Mexico City and Cancún) is generally at -7h in relation to Europe. Daylight saving time does not occur on the same dates as in Europe, and some regions do not observe daylight saving time.
Electricity and internet access
Mexican plugs are type A and B, with a voltage of 127V. An adapter is required for most European appliances. Internet coverage is good in cities and tourist areas, but can be more limited in rural areas. International hotels generally offer free Wi-Fi access, making it easy to stay connected.
Safety
Tourist areas are generally well secured, but caution is advised, especially in large cities such as Mexico City. Don't show valuables and only use official taxis or transport apps to get around. For up-to-date and accurate information on security, check https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/mexico before you leave.
Currency
The local currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN) and although the Euro is easily exchanged, local cash transactions are preferred. Visa and Mastercard are accepted in larger establishments, but cash is recommended, especially for purchases in artisan markets and small shops.
Weather
Mexico has a wide variety of climates depending on the region, from desert in the north to tropical in the south. The best time to visit central and southern Mexico, including the Cancún region, is during the dry season, from November to April. The months of September and October should be avoided by travellers wishing to visit the Caribbean beaches, due to the risk of hurricanes along the coast.
Languages
Spanish is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. In some villages, indigenous languages such as Mayan and Nahuatl are still spoken, adding to the country's charm and linguistic diversity.
Accommodation quality
Hotels in Mexico range from luxury resorts to eco-lodges in the heart of nature. In coastal resorts, standards are comparable to European standards, while in rural areas, facilities may be more modest but offer an authentic cultural immersion.
Food quality
Mexican cuisine is world-renowned for its flavour and variety. Expect tacos, enchiladas, ceviche and other specialities. Be sure to buy bottled water, as tap water is not safe for travellers.
Other topics
From the archaeological sites of Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza to the beaches of the Caribbean coast and charming colonial cities such as Oaxaca and Guanajuato, Mexico offers extraordinary cultural and natural riches.
