Overview
The Hotel Palomar offers a sophisticated artful retreat in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Hidden five floors above the city hustle and bustle and just steps away from ever-busy SOMA district, this Kimpton hotel is modern but not trendy, with playful touches throughout. Located at 4th Street and Market Street, Hotel Palomar sits within a short walk of Union Square shops, Moscone Convention Center and the city’s vibrant museum district. With a reputation for top service and individual attention, Hotel Palomar was a member of Conde Naste Traveler's 2006 Gold List, and has earned the prestigious AAA Four Diamond hotel award every year since the hotel debuted in 1999.

Pleasant Palomar
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
For the value offered through Perfect Escapes, this hotel is amazing. Traveling with several others staying at other San Francisco hotels, it was easy to see that I had the best of everything at the Palomar. The only negative part of the trip was the restaurant. The first day, we could not even get seated for breakfast, and there were several dirty tables with very few customers in the restaurant. The next day I enjoyed a simple continental breakfast, with the Perfect Escapes upgrade, but I was treated like a beggar for not 'paying' for my meal. This trend continued throughout my stay. In addition, I was served and drank coffee from a dirty coffee cup one morning. The wait staff made no apology but acted rudely, as if I were at fault. Dinner time was no better. After paying $6.50 for a cup of tea afternoon, I decided the Palomar restaurant was not worth the trouble. On the upside, the rest of the staff was friendly and helpful, and I would recommend this hotel to others. -Renee, from Freeburg, United States - 10/20/2009
Great Location, Expected More
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
Nice clean room but I think I expected more quality based on what I had read about this Hotel. Big downside is that breakfast doesn't open till 8am which is a little late when you want to get the most out of your day. On both mornings, there was a queue of people waiting to get into breakfast and then only one person serving. Again not what I would expect from a supposedly quality hotel. Happy hour was a nice touch. -Linda, from Irvine, United States - 9/3/2009
Value Good

Not sure how the Kimpton Group wants to brand themselves. Nice hotel, quiet, considering location. But, no shampoo in room and only one bar of soap, these aren't deal breakers, but you do have to wonder if this is a tactical or strategic plan. Complimentary breakfast was forgettable and the details of having a complimentary vs paying for breakfast seemed unnecessarily confusing and maybe another marketing strategy. IE "you can have this on the table, but not this or this, but because I am a nice guy go ahead and eat the berries, though you are not really supposed to." We stayed at a BW in Sonoma who solved the problem by bringing your little breakfast to your room. Pretty simple strategy. -Nan Pratt , from Decatur, United States - 7/7/2009
Great Hotel but Lacking Great Service
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
They weren't friendly. What bothers me is I never know if I got upgraded & always have to beg for a late checkout. A front desk should know that my reservation is guaranteed by PE, & tell me if I got an upgrade or can have late checkout (which I had to beg for despite low traffic @ Palomar). Maybe they tried to make up for their lackluster service b/c somehow I got chocolate strawberries & a 1/2 bottle of wine, but I was too afraid to partake b/c hotels always charge for this stuff. ALSO, about the free breakfast (or lack thereof), it was only coffee/juice & pastries, not even cereal!! There was only 1 tiny pastry left and no juice, but there was tons of other stuff, who are they kidding? RIP OFF. Wait staff was rude so I left to go someplace normal. Overall the hotel was modern & clean. Bed was luxurious & no street noise. Bathroom was tiny. In the end, I paid too much for service I could get at the Hilton. -Arin, from San Jose, United States - 6/25/2009
Hotel Palomar - San Francisco
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
The Hotel Palomar is well-located, well-appointed, stylish, and quiet. Staff is very professional and pleasant. Kimpton Hotels provide great values in quality properties with a high level of unique design at each property. I have stayed at this property several times in years past and never fail to be impressed. The only complaint I have is the steep cost of valet parking ($45/day) - usually do not have a car in the city but a weekend in Napa necessitated one. -Peter Portney , from Boston, United States - 6/17/2009
Too Many Derelicts
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
Within 5 steps of my hotel I never failed to be accosted by an aggressive panhandler or seriously deranged schizophrenic. Additionally there was no coffee maker in the room and phone connection charges of $1 per call. Room was spacious and spotless. Bathroom was minuscule and lacked an exhaust fan so it got very steamy after each shower. Although the bath had some updates, it still had the original tub and dingy ceramic tile surround. Friendly, helpful staff. However, the week before arrival I requested a non pet floor. This didn't happen and we endured dog yapping for several hours one night. Definitely not a 4 star hotel. -Kirk Hogan , from Madison, United States - 4/7/2009
Pre-Valentine's Day
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
I found this hotel to be close to lots of activity. The staff was great and I am looking forward to staying here again. I do have one concern that there were a couple of wine/champagne corks under one of the chairs in the sitting area, which concerns me about the focus on cleaning the room. However, the stay and the wine reception were top notch. -Cheryl, from Richmond, United States - 2/19/2009
Great Property

Loved this hotel! It's perfectly located in the middle of tons of shopping, restaurants and nightlife. It was very well appointed and very clean. Our room was really big and spacious. The staff was exceptional...always friendly and attentive and making sure that everything was perfect during our stay. The hotel has a car that took us and picked us up from various restaurants throughout the city and that was such an unexpected yet welcomed perk. And I actually got engaged at the hotel the first night we were there and it just added to the hotel's charm and appeal!!! I will definitely stay there on my next trip to San Francisco. -Jennifer, from DALLAS, United States - 10/22/2008
Hotel Palomar - Convenient Location, Well Maintain

Nice attention to detail. Perfect location for my visits to San Francisco since it's so close to the Powell St. BART station. Can get here with luggage straight from SFO with no hassle. -Dev, from San Diego, United States - 10/17/2008
Location, Location, Location

San Fran has lots to offer, unfortunately not all of it is within walking distance. However, the Palomar comes close. From its 4th and Market locale, we were able to walk to Union Square, Chinatown, Coit Tower and the Ferry Building. One afternoon we were even able to walk the distance to Fisherman's Wharf and enjoy the trolley car ride back. The hotel is only two blocks from the MOMA. Movie theaters, restaurants and shopping surround the hotel. We did choose to take a cab to the newly refurbished Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park and the DeYoung museum. We ate breakfast at the hotel, but when the bill for four was well over $100 for breakfast, we recognized we had to eat somewhere else. For dinner, a few blocks away, we had an ethnic gastronomical delight for eight people at Chutney, which only set us back $91. A far better deal. And Chutney is within easy walking distance! -Michael Phillips , from Portland, United States - 10/9/2008
A Winner!

We felt safe and cared for. The staff was friendly and responded to requests. We felt welcome and the hotel was clean and neat. It is in the midst of Market and the bustle of the city, and yet the atmosphere was that of an oasis. The amenities were above standard, and the food outstanding. Room service was splendid, and we would stay there again. -Lady M Lindal , from Seattle, United States - 10/6/2008
Comfortable and Classy
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
Although Hotel Palomar remains pricey for a hotel room, you have to compare it to the alternatives in the area. The hotel itself was quite modern and up to date with marble in the bathrooms, quality fixtures and one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in. Being a Kimpton member we also had the privilege of upgrading our room to the executive king which was like having a 1 bedroom apartment. The only odd thing about the layout of the room was the placement of the flat screen TV opposite the sleeping area. It was however explained it would eventually be mounted on the wall which made more sense. Although the staff were exceptionally friendly, we did have to make repeated requests. Wine tasting in the evening was a nice touch although we didn't indulge. Room service was a little disappointing. The hotel was centrally located, easily accessible to the BART station, walking distance to shopping (right off Market). Overall would definitely stay here again all things considered. -Nicole White , from cerritos, United States - 10/1/2008
Central and Friendly

Hotel Palomar is located in a great, central location. Very close to several transport options and a short walk to plenty of restaurants and good shopping. We had a good quality, comfortable room and would highly recommend the hotel. -Sue, from London, England - 10/1/2008
Great Stay for Business and Leisure
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
Stayed in the Palomar for the Oracle Open World conference. The hotel is perfectly located between the Moscone Center and Union Square making it ideal for conferences and shopping. It isn't as big as the Marriott across the street and that's a big plus. The Palomar has all the amenities needed for business. I would recommend it and I’ll stay there again if I’m in San Francisco (business or leisure). The price was quite high, probably due to the Oracle show. We got a great deal through Perfect Escapes and payed far less than others in less nice hotels. With free internet, a good king size bed, big screen TV and great service, this is really a good place to go. -Frank Dorst , from Nieuwegein, Netherlands - 9/30/2008
Less Than Impressed

Room was small. Décor was shabby. TV did not work. Had to ask for all of the amenities that were on my reservation. Not worth the money, at all. -Michelle, from winter garden, United States - 9/26/2008
Great Location - but Not Fully Aware of Package Te
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
I stumbled upon PerfectEscapes.com after spending several hours over a 2-3 day period searching for a hotel in San Francisco. I was vacationing alone in the city for 2 days and wanted a nicer, newer hotel in a great location. Part of the PE package was a noon check-in (on Availability). After a flight and shuttle delay, I arrived at the hotel at 1:45 and was told they did not have a room ready. When I pressed them they called housekeeping and cleared a room for me. I also had to remind them of most of the other amenities in the package. A few of the details were different as well. They delivered the food and wine without corkscrew, glasses or silverware. Otherwise the staff was very accommodating and the location was outstanding - convenient to BART, streetcar, cable car and shopping. -Jill, from Fairfax, United States - 8/27/2008

Our Favorite SF Hotel
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
We love Kimpton hotels in general, and the Palomar is the cream of the crop in SF.
The rooms are stylish without being outrageous or uncomfortable, and the service is very good.
The lobby is a little small (although the bar upstairs is perfect for lounging) and if you want utter quiet be sure to ask for a room overlooking the inner courtyard rather than Market Street.
But you can't beat the location, right up the escalator from BART and 1/2 block from the Cable Car turnaround at Powell. -Anita, from San Francisco, CA, United States - 2/21/2008
Very Nice, but Very Pricey
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
I loved the hotel. It is beautiful inside and out. right in the middle of all that's San Fran, but my God, the price. This place is nice but very expensive. It has Ritz Carlton prices but not Ritz Carlton rooms and service.
Parking fee is a lot and not part of your room rate. So be ready. Bell Captain Earnest is great and very helpful. Front desk had money issues. They didn't seem to have any change. Employees were giving me the change back for room cost. I found that strange too.
Over all I had a great stay, but won't stay there again because it was too expensive. -Alberto Rodriguez , from West Palm Beach, United States - 1/24/2008
