You may have a shirt, sticker, or button that says “I Love NY” but New York City loves you. Thanks to a strong showing of tourists this year, NYC has just announced itself as the top destination for 2009.

New York City had 45.25 million visitors in 2009, making it the top destination in the country and taking over for rival Orlando, Florida which this year drops to second place. While 2009 was the source of much suffering for major tourist destinations around the country, a large advertising campaign helped lure travelers to New York, helping relieve some of the stress hotels, restaurants, and shops have been feeling. While rates of travel still have not picked up entirely, NYC is definitely proving its strength and longevity as a continued popular destination for travelers from all over the world.

In addition to other promotions, the tourism bureau has also announced 15 luxury hotels that will be offering third night free promotions to guests through February. The participating hotels were not listed in the statement, though we’ve recently seen these offers at New York’s W Hotels and Sofitel New York.
