In a survey of British travelers, Thailand was ranked the #1 most hospitable country. The almost 1,500 British travelers surveyed ranked 10 countries according to their perceptions of hospitality when visiting each destination.
It’s not much of a surprise that Thailand ranked #1, the country known widely as the land of smiles and renowned for exceptional hospitality and friendliness towards international travelers. At the complete opposite end of the rankings was France, which was rated the least hospitable by Britons. Ranking in the middle was the United States. Yet the amount of visitors to each of these three places remains steadily high, which begs the question, does a country’s perceived friendliness towards travelers influence where they choose to go?
France has a reputation of slight snobbery, but would that really stop you from traveling there? In fact, some would say that France’s particular attitude is part of the appeal in visiting. The French expect you to behave like a local, to act not as a tourist but an international citizen, with respect to local culture. Many travelers find that the more they integrate themselves with local society, the richer and more authentic their experience is.
Clearly you can’t judge an entire country by its stereotype, each travel destination has a diverse population and the experiences you gather in each can vary widely. These recent rankings only prove even more reason to travel often, travel far and wide, and to always travel with an open mind.
