With airlines offering less and less food options aboard flights and security measures prohibiting many items, travelers are succumbing to the less than desirable selections at airport food outlets.

Tasteless and costly, airport food has long had a bad reputation. However as more travelers rush to find something to hold them over through a long flight, the menus are coming into question. While many airports are improving their selections by adding brand name or high-end eateries, the majority of travelers don’t have time to sit and enjoy a relaxing meal as they rush through security to their gate. The fast and easy food vendors are often the only option and not a good one.

Airports on the whole claim to have prices that are equal to or up to 10% above street costs. A few airports have no limits to the percentage increase and most of the food vendors compare their prices to the most expensive food outlets in the city. A sandwich stand in the airport compares its prices, for example, to a sandwich stand in the expensive part of a city, or in a tourist hotspot where prices are already higher. And these differences aren’t going unnoticed.

As people become more aware of what they put in their mouths, there is a lot of frustration over the lack of fresh and health options at decent prices. For frequent business travelers, constantly grabbing a bottle of water, meal or snack can really cost them, both in money and health, but there are few available alternatives and no where else to go. Stuck in the secure airport section until they land on the other side, travelers are demanding better options and better prices be available.

While convenience, quality and availability come at a price, for some travelers it’s just too high.
