The Spanish tradition of siesta is taken seriously by locals and tourists alike. Who can disagree with a tradition that requires a deliciously large meal, a midday nap and a bursting nightlife scene?!

However, it seems in these modern times people have become a bit lax about what siesta silence entails, and Granada, Spain is not about to let anyone off the hook. A new law just passed this week enforces the code of silence between 3pm and 5pm each day, with a fine of up to 3,000 Euros for anyone found causing “unnecessary noise.”

Dancing, singing, loud music, barking dogs, and household noisemakers (such as vacuums) would all be subject to the fine. Other measures are also being taken to clean up the city including fines for spitting, beggars, and public urination. While these seem understandable, we wonder if the city of Granada really will be day-dreaming peacefully or if like our naps in pre-school, siesta silence is a thing of the past?
