After a 5 year absence, British Airways is set to resume flights from Heathrow Airport to Riyadh and Jeddah beginning in March, 2009.
The airline’s previous halt of flights to Saudi Arabia was due to a number of factors including high costs and waning profits, as well as safety concerns post 9/11. In the British Airways absence, BMI Airlines began flights to Saudi Arabia that have steadily increased over the past 4 years, but will now have major competition when British Airways launches its direct flights this spring.
Despite the weak economy that has affected even oil-rich Saudi Arabian development, international business continues to swarm upon the Middle East, creating a demand for flights that could fill both airlines’ schedules.
