Beginning January 23, 2007, U.S. citizens traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card. (Similar passport requirements for land and sea travelers don?t go into effect until the beginning of 2008, under current government plans). These new passport requirements don?t apply to U.S. citizens traveling to, or returning directly from, U.S. territories like Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands. For more information, see the US Department of State website.
