Mauritius
Several waves of colonization and immigration over the centuries have made this island nation located east of Madagascar one of the world’s true melting pots. You’ll detect strong African, Indian, and European influences in the architecture and cuisine. What you’ll notice first, though, is that Mauritius, one of Africa’s most prosperous countries, has some of the most luxurious resorts and idyllic beaches you’ll see anywhere.
Activities and Attractions:
White sand and calm waters are the hallmarks of Mauritian beaches. The island has many to choose from. Nearly all offer safe swimming and plenty of color for snorkelers. Between April and September, surfers flock to the west coast swells.
A well-kept secret is that the waters around Mauritius offer some fine deep-sea fishing—trophy marlin, tuna, and barracuda are all possibilities, and several world-record fish have been landed in the area. Diving, too, is excellent, as the island is nearly surrounded by reefs. You can also book a submarine tour, which will allow you to see coral, sea turtles, and even some shipwrecks without getting wet.
Away from the beach you can discover some of the fascinating culture of Mauritius. There are the ruins of French and Dutch fortifications to explore, as well as bird preserves and animal parks. Inland, you can visit a former sugar mill, and the wild and beautiful Black River Gorges National Park. In the village of Triolet, there’s a Hindu temple dating from 1819. And don’t miss Chamarel. This ethereal place has a field of dunes streaked with rainbow colors, the result of ancient volcanic mineral deposits.
Insider Tip:
There’s a conservative aspect to Mauritian culture, especially when it comes to clothing. Women: On the beach, a bikini is okay, but keep that top on. Men and women will be expected to cover legs and shoulders when visiting religious sites.
