Virgin Gorda
Virgin Gorda (yes, the name does mean “Fat Virgin”) is an island about the size of Manhattan—though there the comparisons end. In the British Virgin Islands, you won’t find many nightclubs or Prada outlets. What you will find is privacy, tranquility, uncrowded beaches, and a water-sport paradise.
Activities and Attractions: The main activity on Virgin Gorda is relaxation, and the main attractions are geographical. The biggest landmark is the 1,368-foot Gorda Peak in the center of the island. You can hike or drive (on the left!) to the top for a view of many of the islands that make up the Virgin Islands archipelago.
Gorda Peak itself is surrounded by rugged Gorda Peak National Park. This enclave offers many hiking trails leading up to and around the summit. You’re likely to spot lizards, harmless snakes, and exotic birds on the way up.
Virgin Gorda has one other spot of protected land, Devil’s Bay National Park. This park is close to some of the best beaches on the island, like The Baths, a striking area where large boulders form pools of various sizes and the snorkeling is excellent. Nearby Trunk Bay has a classic white-sand beach. It’s reachable only from the water, or by hiking in from the next beach over, so it tends to be very unpopulated.
If you’re a scuba diver, head for the North Sound area. Diving outfits can take you to see spectacular reefs and maybe even a wreck or two.
In addition to diving, the BVI are a prime destination for sailors. Rent or charter everything from a sunfish to a 60-foot catamaran. The waters around Virgin Gorda are full of minor islets that make interesting anchorage points.
Insider Tip: Although the British Virgin Islands are a British Overseas Territory, U.S. dollars are the official currency.
