Bermuda
Although sometimes lumped in with the Caribbean, Bermuda—located directly east of North Carolina--is really its own world. It’s a place where businessmen wear shorts, billboards are outlawed, and the landscape is dotted with almost unbearably quaint coral cottages. You’ll find pink beaches, excellent shopping, historic homes, and a genteel atmosphere that lends itself to vacations both elegant and relaxing.
Activities and Attractions:
Getting around Bermuda is half the fun. If you’re feeling adventurous (traffic flows on the left), rent a moped or scooter. A far more reliable option is to hire a taxi—they can be rented by the hour. Hail one with a blue flag on the hood—these drivers are authorized to act as tour guides. Or, simply forget roads. As a visitor, you can’t rent a car, but you can rent a motorboat and discover the island’s shoreline that way.
A great way to start exploring Bermuda, though, is with a walking tour of Hamilton, Bermuda’s largest city. Must-see spots include century-old Fort Hamilton and the Bermuda Historical Society Museum. Front Street is a clearinghouse for all things British, including Scottish wool, Harris tweeds, and English China and crystal. Be sure to allow time to just wander, and to relax at an English-style pub—there are many to choose from in town.
Outside of Hamilton, don’t miss the spectacular Crystal Caves, lush Botanical Gardens, the Bermuda Aquarium, the Bermuda Maritime Museum, and, of course, the beach. Elbow beach is the safest and most popular on the island. Secluded Astwood Cove offers privacy. Snorkelers like Church Bay, and everyone admires the long curve of pink sand that is famous Horseshoe Bay Beach.
