Cape Cod & The Islands
What are you looking for in a Cape Cod vacation? Quaint New England charm? A bit of bohemia? The perfect beach vacation? Seclusion? Celebrity sightings? Whatever it is you’re hoping for, it can be found in some corner of Cape Cod, or on the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.
Activities and Attractions: No matter what time of year you visit, spend some time on the Cape Cod National Seashore. This 40-mile stretch of rolling dune is dotted with picture-perfect lighthouses, cranberry bogs, and historic homes. The high bluffs are spectacular, and it isn’t unusual to see whales spouting offshore.
Allow plenty of time to explore as many Cape Cod communities as you can. Offbeat Provincetown is a gay and lesbian Mecca where everyone’s welcome to join in the festival of gallery browsing and café-hopping. For a more bucolic experience, roam the dunes at tiny Truro, where Cape Codders come to get away from it all. And don’t miss Plymouth, home of the region’s first tourist draw: Plymouth Rock. The 15 towns that make up the Cape offer a remarkable diversity of experience.
Spend a few days among the yachts, inns, and curio shops of quietly affluent Nantucket. Then ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard, where even summer crowds can’t dim the gingerbread-studded charm of the island’s New England fishing village past.
Don’t leave Cape Cod without sampling the local cuisine. You’ll never have a fresher lobster, so be sure to partake at least once during your visit. Eat it like a real Bay-Stater: boiled, and served with melted butter for dipping each bite.
Insider Tip: The somewhat protected waters of Cape Cod Bay are generally a little warmer and calmer than the ocean on the picturesque but windswept Nantucket Sound side of the Cape--an important consideration if you have your heart set on swimming.
