Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo
The Pacific coast beach towns of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are only four miles apart, enabling any traveler to experience two vacations for the price of one. You can spend one day poking around the fishing town of Zihuatanejo, and the next taking advantage of more developed Ixtapa. Both towns offer beautiful beaches, fine resorts, and long, relaxing days.
Activities and Attractions: Whether you base your stay at Ixtapa or Zihuatanejo, your vacation will revolve around the ocean. Playa Los Gatas in Zihuatanejo has placid water and great snorkeling at a shallow reef. The water tends to be a little rougher at Ixtapa, but when it’s calm, Playa Quieta’s white sands are exquisite.
If it is choppy, though, try Playa Linda, about 8 miles north of Ixtapa. It’s almost always safe, and there are beachside kiosks where you can rent watersport equipment. You can also arrange to go horseback riding along the shore.
Playa Linda is also the departure point for ferries headed to Isla Ixtapa. This small island has the best snorkeling in the area. You can rent masks and fins and lots of other equipment on the Isla Ixtapa beach.
Another pleasant side trip is an excursion to Los Morros de Los Pericos islands—your hotel can probably arrange this for you. These rocky islands are populated by countless birds and make a fascinating day trip.
When you’re done with the ocean for the day, it’s time to plan your evening activities. Will you dance until closing time in Ixtapa, or sip a margarita under the stars on the beach in Zihuatanejo? The beauty of this part of Mexico is that you can easily do both.
Insider Tip: When should you visit? Summer can be hot, but in July and August, diving conditions are perfect. The water is also clear during the November-February high season.
