James - For Young At Heart Who Are Into Art

Clever use of space, hip lobby, attentive service (packed up a substantial fresh breakfast for me to go so I could make an early flight!), and great location. Full bar and high end radio stand out as unique, but the room itself is neither large nor noteworthy. Who cares? Nice alternative to the chains, and if you take time to notice the art installations and use the gym and spa you'll be glad you did. -Patty, from Wilton, United States - 11/24/2009

Amazing James Hotel!!

My wife and I stayed at the James hotel for one night (Sunday). We arrived from the suburbs a bit after noon, and although the room was not ready they happily took our luggage while we did a bit of shopping. We came back around 2 and our room was ready. The room was fantastic!! Very comfortable bed and unique layout of bedroom and sitting area. Even a small bar was included (corkscrew provided). The hotel is within walking distance of all major shopping in Chicago and the service and staff are top-rate. We would definitely stay here again. -P. Excellent location, service and amenities. Did not have time for gym or spa but heard they were good. Staff is helpful and most accommodating. Rooms are sizeable and the beds are divine.
Only drawback is the popularity of the bar and the lobby. Really no room to have a drink and some appetizers after a day of sightseeing and shopping. It seems to be a favorite of young Chicago professionals. So we opted for room service, and the hamburger is fabulous. Would highly recommend this hotel and would stay there again. -Meredith Mccormack , from Stockton, United States - 10/16/2009
Very Nice Hotel

When we arrived, we were told the James had experienced a water line break and were offering guests a free night if we went to their sister hotel (Affinia); didn't want to move hotels, but after realizing they didn't have any rooms other than two double beds, we took their offer. Came back the second night and loved the upgraded room we received for the trouble. However, long story short, my wife had an allergic reaction to something in our room/building that caused us to have to find a different hotel (went back to the Affinia, which is a great hotel very similar to the James). The staff was very understanding and accommodating due to the circumstances; refunded us our money for the third night on a nonrefundable booking. Would recommend this hotel to anyone. Centrally located to all the fun stuff in downtown Chicago. -David Rejino , from Austin, United States - 10/6/2009

The James hotel is in a very convenient location, close to many good restaurants, movies and Michigan avenue shopping. The hotel staff was friendly, accommodating and responsive. Having the free use of three computers and a wall of books and magazines was unusual, but thoughtful for guests. Having an adjoining good restaurant is a plus, and Sunday dim sum brunch is a must. My king size room and bath was a joy to relax in. This hotel is a keeper. -Marci Mirman , from Potomac, United States - 10/2/2009

The few days I stayed were way too short. Invited my cousin who lives locally to join me and we both loved it. The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was great, the location great. I couldn't believe I'd never heard of this hotel before. I can't imagine staying anywhere else when I visit Chicago! -Robin, from Los Angeles, CA, United States - 9/30/2009

Wonderful Stay at The James!
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
We had a wonderful stay at the James. Location is great, staff were very friendly and welcoming. Hotel room was very clean and comfortable, some street noise late Saturday night / early Sunday morning but only to be expected in the middle of the city center, with bars close by. Would definitely return to The James! -Elizabeth, from Germantown Hills, United States - 9/11/2009

Enjoyed our stay. Walked to shopping and the Art Museum. Although we didn't eat dinner in the restaurant, the room service was excellent and the breakfast in the restaurant was superb. The service was the best ever. Try the freshly prepared stuffed donut holes in the AM and the pretzel stick wrapped crab cake in the PM. -Mary, from Mukwonago, United States - 9/9/2009
Wonderful From Start to Finish!

This was our first time in The James and I was very impressed with the hotel and the staff. They went out of their way to be helpful and accommodating and the room was one of the nicest that we have stayed in! The valet parking was a little steep ($50 a day), but they were great about keeping our luggage until 4pm and letting us tour the city on the day of our checkout. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone and would be happy to stay there again. -Diane, from Smithville, Canada - 8/20/2009

Loved it! Wonderful hotel, super friendly staff at the front desk and great attention to detail. We were provided city maps as well as directions to popular area attractions. Our late check-out and early check-in were graciously honored and we enjoyed every moment of our stay. Beautiful, clean, classy hotel in the perfect location! -Rebecca, from Tinley Park, United States - 8/10/2009

The James Hotel

Loved Chicago and also loved The James. We had an upgrade included in our Perfect Escapes booking and ended up in a studio room on the 15th floor. The rooms are modern and very comfortable with lots of nice touches both in the decor but also in little extras such as a safe that accommodates a laptop. The breakfast (not included) was excellent though by no means cheap. Staff were consistently pleasant and helpful. The location is very convenient for strolling the Magnificent Mile etc. Only negative is the dismal view over the car park and interior courtyard area however this did not detract from our stay, there are blinds which look fine when 3/4 closed! I would definitely recommend this hotel. -Janice Simpson , from Gananoque, Canada - 7/21/2009

We'll Stay At The James Again...
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
We like to stay at modern boutique hotels, and we travel with our 2 young children. After reading many reviews, we decided to stay at The James. As you probably know, The James is close to many attractions - Miracle Mile, Museum of Contemporary Art, Navy Pier, Lake Michigan, more. The Trader Joe's across the street can help keep your food costs down, and you can take your food to the beach (about a 10 minute walk with kids). The room was big enough, and it had a nice view. We recently spent a week in San Francisco (at the Hotel Union Square), and we were surprised by how much more an equivalent room costs in Chicago. That said, The James is worth the price if you want modern decor and a location close to the attractions in the city. -John Moncke , from kansas city, United States - 6/29/2009

Once ensconced in my upgraded room, which didn't happen until Perfect Escapes intervened, I was very pleased, comfortable & contented. Until, that is, I realized that I did not receive the promised amenity. Very nice room, excellent toiletries, good location. David Burke's Primehouse is one of Chicago's best. Would I stay here again? Of course. Maybe I'll get two amenities next time. -Charles Haley , from Matthews, United States - 5/22/2009
Trendy Comfort
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
Found the James Hotel to be a lovely, comfortable hotel. The staff was friendly & helpful although the concierge staff was hit & miss depending on who was sitting at the desk at any given time of day or evening. On the weekend, the bar is extremely noisy and spills into the lobby area so if looking for a quiet respite, you won't find it there. Having said that, I enjoyed my stay and found the amenities plentiful. -Bruna Lewis , from Vallejo, United States - 5/21/2009

Excellent Stay

Stayed at The James during labor day weekend. It wasn't busy when we checked in, but really picked up around Sunday.
Overall, the stay was nearly perfect. We had the studio room, which was quite nice. Amazingly comfortable beds and pillows! Very clean and very nice. It was the perfect combination of plush, practical and comfortable, without being over the top. Nice bathroom products as well. The only drawback was that there was no view, as we were on the "inside" of the hotel looking out into a courtyard on the street.
Otherwise, very friendly staff and great service. Location was absolutely perfect - can walk to the pier, right on the Magnificent Mile and otherwise close to all public transport. The restaurant (Primehouse) for dinner was spectacular. Had a couples massage at the spa, which was OK, but nothing special. For the price, this was definitely not worth it.
Highly recommend! -Alexander Mogilevich , from Richmond Hill, Canada - 9/8/2008

The James Hotel was located on Michigan Ave. and gave us prime location to the hottest shopping and eating. The modern architecture and furnishings really add to the atmosphere. When we checked in, our king room was gone, so they upgraded us to a queen suite and welcomed us with warm cookies from their restaurant. The free gym downstairs is a nice added touch to help work off those extra vacation calories. We would definitely stay here again. -Sarah, from Phoenix, United States - 7/23/2008
Mixed Feelings
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
Although the room was large (I got an upgrade to an apartment) it didn't have a bath. Also, the TV was analog and there was no DVD player. I suppose the James Hotel makes money off of people having to buy movies from them: $15.99 a piece. The rooms on the lower floor are a bit noisy due to the close proximity to the streets. And the hallways are a bit dark and tight. The bed was very comfortable. The sheet count decent. We used room service a few times and they were consistently slow. The front desk was also very busy. The concierge is very helpful, stop by to get coupons to Bloomingdale's etc. I would recommend this hotel, but it is not as trendy as I had original hoped for. And if it hadn't been for the great price I had booked my room for it would be overpriced. The shower was nice, it had a rain shower head and the Kiehl's products/comfy slippers were a nice touch. -Susan Kim , from Chicago, United States - 7/9/2008

A Mix of Art, Hotel, and Kiehls

I surprised my fiancee by proposing to her and then whisking her off to the James for a fun Chicago summer adventure.
Since she's an architect, I knew she would really enjoy the details of the rooms that I could see from the photos: the Barcelona lounge chair, porthole windows for the bathrooms, and the Kiehl's bathroom products. She never wanted to leave the room.
Being an artist, I liked that they had installation pieces in the lobby and a stocked bar with a complete bartender's kit in the room. Even the late night room service was tasty, although rather expensive.
Overall, a great stay in the middle of downtown. -Randy Antin, from San Francisco, United States - 10/25/2007
