Overview
Cavallo Point – the Lodge at the Golden Gate establishes an enchanting 'base camp' where visitors can discover the San Francisco Bay Area's best. Located in historic Fort Baker within the Golden Gate National Parks at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge, Cavallo Point is the San Francisco Bay's first national-park lodge. Here guests are tempted with exceptional activities, amenities and attractions. Within minutes, visitors can beach comb along the Pacific, ride a San Francisco cable car or hike the Marin Headlands.
Rising as a backdrop to Cavallo Point's parkland setting is the celebrated Golden Gate Bridge, with San Francisco's world-class culture and attractions just minutes away. On site, the lodge offers exciting activities and experiences. Guests can indulge in soothing treatments at the Healing Arts Center & Spa; hike scenic coastline trails; stretch in complimentary daily yoga classes; savor cuisine by a Michelin two-star chef; sip estate wines from one of California's largest cellars; enjoy the collection of original photography and art; join guided bird-watching and wildflower walks; and at the end of a wonderful day, relax in historic or contemporary accommodations. Guests may also discover enrichment via multi-day adventures and programs. Hosted by top talent, these one-of-a-kind experiences focus on three areas: Adventure & Well-Being, Creative Arts and Culinary Arts.
Although just five miles from San Francisco and 21 miles from San Francisco International Airport (SFO), Cavallo Point is located near Sausalito where the urban edge turns into untamed coastal wildlands. The world-class attractions of San Francisco, Marin, the Napa and Sonoma wine country, Monterey and Carmel are all a short distance away.
Activities create appetites, and Executive Chef Joseph Humphrey's menu at the hotel's signature restaurant, Murray Circle, presents Bay Area cuisine with a French accent. In late 2007, Chef Humphrey was awarded two Michelin stars. His skillful touch showcases the bounty of local and organic farms, ranches and culinary artisans. Next door, Farley Bar is a great gathering place. A dedicated wine and olive oil center offers presentations and tastings.
Choice is integral to our guest experience, including accommodations. The lodge offers 68 historic rooms and suites in carefully restored, National Historic Landmark buildings that were Fort Baker's officers' quarters. They feature authentic pressed tin ceilings, fireplaces and oversized foyers. Many have views of the San Francisco skyline and Bay. There are also 74 contemporary rooms and suites in new buildings of 'green' design, many with spectacular Golden Gate Bridge views. All accommodations feature organic linens, flat-panel HD televisions and Wi-Fi connectivity.
The lodge also features more than 25,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event space, offering function rooms and outdoor areas with character and exceptional views, and space for events of 10 to 250 guests.
A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, Cavallo Point is the newest addition to the Passport Resorts collection, which includes the acclaimed Post Ranch Inn.

Views, rooms, service all excellent. Parking is a problem for the hillside rooms -- that's the only downside. -Josy Ingersoll , from sonoma, United States - 1/29/2010

Wonderful setting, incredible views, friendly staff, the best spa ever! Shall I go on? Walked up to the Golden Gate and across-didn't even know I had a "bucket list" but it was definitely on the list. Would look forward to going again! -Nannette Woolford Woolford , from Sacto, United States - 1/22/2010

The use and rehab of the historic Army buildings and the location of the cove facing San Francisco make for an "impossible to beat" location. -Hugh Beatty , from creston , United States - 12/28/2009

The view from our room was fantastic! The room was beautiful and the staff very helpful and friendly. I would definitely stay again. It is a good place to stay and enjoy rather than being busy elsewhere. The restaurant serves pricey small portions but good food. We wouldn't eat dinner there again because of that. Overall, a wonderful place! -Johanna Ronnmann , from Hollister, United States - 12/24/2009

What I liked: Setting, old world charm, staff, self parking (much better than valet), the day spa is over the top (most spas are pushing products, especially liked the quiet room with fireplaces, lunch of salmon sandwich with tea was just the best), views of the city bay, parade grounds, location, beds are great, and once again the staff were excellent. What could be improved: Dinner prices are out of line, $17 for a burger in the bar is too much, $27 for a 2 oz serving of snapper without even a vegetable is too much, wine list is way over priced and $25 corkage is a little high. Upon getting into the room, we had to call room service to clean the toilet before we used it. Live bugs in the room were not a problem, but dead ones on the window sills should not have been there. No ice service without calling room service was not appreciated.
Overall, THANKS, we had a great time and will definitely be returning and encouraging our friends to make reservations. -Nannette Woolford Woolford , from Sacto, United States - 12/7/2009
Wonderful Stay at The Cavallo

Amazing location just above the Golden Gate Bridge. Wonderful hikes from the resort with great views of the Bay Area. We had a wonderful room, courtesy of the complimentary room upgrade with Perfect Escapes. We will definitely return! -Aarti Madan , from Los Angeles, United States - 11/30/2009
Great!

Our stay at Cavallo Point was wonderful! We received an upgrade to a Contemporary Jr. Suite and had a fantastic breakfast both mornings of the stay. The Murray Circle restaurant was pricey but well worth it. The spa was a perfect way to complete our getaway before returning to the reality of work, kids, school, etc. We live about 10 miles away, but felt like we were in a different, more remote place. Divine. -Carole Bigot , from San Rafael, United States - 11/12/2009

Service
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
The setting is fantastic. The service in most areas was indifferent and not adequate - forgetting restaurant orders, no silverware, wrong week's information in arrival packet, employees talking amongst themselves while guests waited for assistance. These are just a few examples, but illustrate the overall service experience. And I was surprised to find the food in the restaurant (over 5 different experiences) to be very average based on the reviews I had seen. -Thomas Martin , from Chico, United States - 10/23/2009
It's Close to SF and Downtown Sausalito, but Why

We were super comfortable in our modern, well furnished and clean "condo" type suite. Loved our view of the bridge rising through the fog. The boutique shop on site offered many interesting items including delicious fresh sourdough with olives. Very nice restaurant, but with a somewhat limited menu. Very courteous staff at the front desk, in the restaurant, the bar, and everywhere else. Due to a failure to communicate, we were unable to get the promised full breakfast on any of the three mornings that we were there. While the staff was quick to make an adjustment in our bill, we would much rather have had the promised breakfasts. We will try to go there again and, if we do, we will try to get an upper suite to avoid the
sounds of the elephants walking back and forth in the upper floor unit.

So Peaceful

The Lodge at Cavallo Point is the perfect relaxing get-away. We stayed in the restored Captain's quarters two bedroom suite which we were upgraded to from a two queen contemporary room. I arrived early, 10 am and they had a room ready in 20 minutes! The staff were all genuinely welcoming and friendly and so accommodating. The spa's steam room, hot tub, pool and beautiful relaxing spaces were complimentary with our room charges. They brought a fresh fruit basket our first night and each morning had tasty coffee and fresh baked pastries. The restaurant was wonderful and reasonably priced, the chef deserves his two Michelin stars. What a beautiful view, you can see the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco through the ever changing weather and have the distant fog horn lull you to a peaceful sleep in the deep and inviting beds. Highly recommended! -Jetaime Hood , from APO, United States - 9/20/2009
Weekend Stay @ Cavallo

Ate in the Murray Circle Restaurant on Saturday evening and had a wonderful meal. Simply delicious food and excellent service provided in a beautiful atmosphere. Enjoyed cocktails and snacks on two occasion on the front patio as well as breakfast. On all 3 occasions, service was severely lacking. During breakfast on Sunday morning we resorted to refilling our own coffee cups rather than wait any longer for the server. Sunday afternoon (at 2:30pm) included a 30 minute wait from the time we placed a drink order until it arrived at our table. The tomato and feta tapas serving, while utterly delicious, was shockingly small. Less than one tomato, and one cube of watermelon? When it was served at our table we could do nothing but laugh. As a fan of tapas dining, I am not unfamiliar with "small plates" but this took the definition to a new low. The incredible view and gorgeous weather somehow made up for the service.
Despite these hiccups I would return to Cavallo Point again. -Erin Kurtz , from Santa Monica, United States - 8/13/2009
We Absolutely Loved It

We booked through Perfect Escapes and got an incredible room upgrade in the historic portion of the hotel (this room was huge and gorgeous), late check in and check out, complimentary delicious breakfast. Our stay couldn't have been nicer. The staff is so friendly and helpful. Shah (sp?) of the spa gave the best massage I've had -- and I've had many! The view is spectacular. Luxury, beauty, peace and quiet! -Lane, from Los Angeles, United States - 7/16/2009

Make Your Stomach Happy

We got a package with free breakfast and a room upgrade. It was very relaxing and we ate brunch, afternoon snacks, and dinner all at the Michelin-rated restaurant / bar. The food is unbelievable, and being served, sitting in comfy chairs outside with a view of the Golden Gate, that is the life. The only thing is that it's pretty cold, so bring layers. -Evan Chan , from Santa Clara, United States - 6/1/2009
Magnificent Place to Stay!!!
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
Cavallo Point is just a magnificent place to stay. You must stay in the historical buildings on the property. We were staying in a king suite facing the view of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. What more could you ask for?? The suite was outstanding. Loved the bed and the large deep bathtub. Could not have asked for anything better. The service was outstanding. The first night my key did not work and within a minute there was someone there with a new key for us. Murray Circle restaurant and Farley bar were great. Am looking forward to going back. -Katherine Berliner , from San Bruno, United States - 4/28/2009
Loved the Perfect Escapes Perks!
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
Because we booked with Perfect Escapes, we received an upgrade from the most basic room to a 1BR suite with a partial bay/city view! After check-in, room service brought us a lovely cheese platter
and a bottle of nice wine, again complimentary. We were able to check in early, but they couldn't accommodate late check-out (although the reception desk did check to see if they could shuffle reservations to make that happen, instead of just saying "no" as so many places do.)
The room was gorgeous -- historic but with every modern comfort. Fabulous bed, lovely decor, nice layout, huge closet and bath. Seriously one of the best hotel rooms we've stayed in.
Our only complaint is the quality of the restaurant. The morning buffet breakfast was terrible -- rubbery scrambled eggs and funky sausage, or some crusty premade breakfast burritos -- and definitely not worth the $35 we'd have paid if it wasn't included. Dinner was disappointing & *not* worth $300; service was on par with Olive Gard -Anita, from San Francisco, CA, United States - 1/22/2009
Some Issues
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
First of all the property is pretty. Our room faced a parking lot but we could see the Golden Gate Bridge view if we went outside. I was bothered that they took a deposit when I made the reservation but was only made aware of this by my credit card company. In addition they took $4.00 a day for a charity when I did not authorize them to do so.
The maids did not bring fresh glasses or coffee mugs when they cleaned. One day they did not even come at all.
I would not stay at this property again. It was Okay but not worth a second trip. -Jeannette York , from Pasadena, United States - 1/5/2009

Excellent cleanliness, service, restaurant (quite elegant) waiter and servers were the best at dinner and breakfast. All employees including welcoming and departing, Betty at the Sauna showing us through, Laurel very considerate to send wine to our room via two very nice gentlemen.... -David Parle, from San Geronimo, United States - 10/14/2008

This place really surprised my wife and I. On a lark for our anniversary in mid July, we stayed a night and had dinner. Close to home, best meal I have had in years, and that room had me falling in love with my lady all over again. Thank you! -Pavlovs Dog, from SF, United States - 8/1/2008
