Built in 1899 on a granite bluff overlooking the Nile, the Sofitel Old Cataract got its name from the spectacular effect of the river colliding with the land. The illustrious hotel with 123 rooms and 8 suites has always attracted a mix of famous figures: Winston Churchill, Agha Khan, King Farouk, Lady Diana and Agatha Christie, who wrote 'Death on the Nile' right here. The gourmet restaurant serves exquisite French and international cuisine in an elegant setting with access for disabled guests.

This hotel oozes old world charm and style. Having stayed twice I am awaiting is reopening to go again. I hope that the refurb will only change the cosmetic appearance of the hotel as the staff and ambiance need no improvement. If you go a second time they will remember you.

Directions:
From Aswan Airport hire a car or take a taxi. Follow the airport road towards the old dam and the start of El Sadat Street until you reach the Mausoleum of Akkad, then continue past the TV building, the church and Fryal Gardens. You will then see the hotel gate.From the railway station, take a car or taxi. Leave the railway station square then take the Nile Corniche, Abtal El Tahrir Street. Once you reach Fryal Gardens, you will see the hotel gate.
