Tropical Luxury in El Dorado

My wife and I recently attended a wedding in Armenia, Columbia - our first visit to South America. The whole experience was delightful, the people, the places, and above all the music. Always intrigued by history and culture we finished with three days at the Sofitel Santa Clara Hotel in the fabled walled city of Cartagena. One of the most beautiful hotels I have ever stayed in and a real oasis in the bustling streets of the old city. The hotel is built in the form of two adjoining squares, a fascinating combination of old and new, with the historical half converted from a former convent, and the contemporary half adjoining it opening onto a modern and very popular swimming pool area. The staff were charming and efficient and went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one. Our abiding memories will be of breakfast taken in the cloisters of the old convent, in the company of the hotel's brilliantly colored and very well behaved resident toucan. -Anthony Smithyman , from Sydney, Australia - 8/26/2008
