Overview
SIDE is our first 5-star hotel in Hamburg, at a very central location between the Binnenalster and several shopping arcades.
We have created a luxury hotel of the 21st Century: a 12-floor-high lifestyle experience which will become a must for any visit to Hamburg.
The architect Jan Störmer created a forward-looking facade featuring a combination of glass and nature stone that stretches across all 12 floors. From the top 3 floors, you have a wonderful view across Hamburg.
This architecture is complimented by the work of designer Matteo Thun from Mailand and the house bears his handprint. Just minimalist, reducing everything to the bare essentials, that is the fundamental idea behind the work of Matteo Thun when he decorated the public spaces.
The atrium-styled lobby, which stretches up to the 8th floor, lives from the illuminated installations of the New York light choreographer Robert Wilson and is an exceptionally beautiful aesthetic experience.

Not a 5***** Hotel
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
On first impression the hotel appears very modern and nice.
The staff at reception was very polite and helpful during our stay, but no help with luggage was offered therefore we had to carry it up to rooms ourselves.
The room was not what to expect in a 5***** Hotel: on closer inspection, the room was not clean, AC in bath did not work, light bulbs in the bathroom were broken and the whole room (although nicely designed) just felt a little "tired" and "worn-out". Housekeeping staff was very, very noisy in the hallways.
As frequent travelers, our experience was OK, if you are expecting a 3-4 star, but it falls very short in trying to make it near 5 stars.
Good things: Great location and friendly reception staff
Still: we didn't feel the 5-star rating is at the moment at all justified. -Ralf, from Frankfurt am Main, Germany - 2/29/2008
Design Hotel?

The location is perfect. The room is OK, but the bar is very small and the TV channels are as bad as possible.
The card system for the upper floors is inefficient. Cards loose their information very easily and it is necessary to have them set up in the reception over and over.
I did not try the breakfast buffet but I found it expensive, considering that there are very good cafes close to the hotel. Try the Alster Pavilion in Jungerstieg with fantastic views over the Alster and breakfast buffet for 7,5€
The lobby is too small and not comfortable. -Ines, from Lisbon, Portugal - 12/27/2007
