Great Hotel

We enjoyed one night during New Years and even though the time we spent here was short, I can definitely say we will be back! Great views, great restaurant and a wonderful staff.
My only gripe is that our room did not have central heat or air, but rather a small toe kick heater in the living room. Even though the room kept warm, I feel a central hvac would be more appropriate for the caliber of this hotel. -David, from WOODLAND HILLS, United States - 1/11/2010

Good hotel, awesome views in the Surf side building. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is within walking distance of eating places. The Perfect Escape package provided a great rate, free breakfasts, and free valet parking. All this contributed to a wonderful stay and an enjoyable time. -Richard Gutierrez , from Lakewood, United States - 11/17/2009

Beautiful setting, view from rooms and their restaurant, Splashes, is amazing. Every staff member we came in contact with fully extended themselves to do what they could to make our stay more enjoyable. -Nayda, from Penticton, Canada - 9/24/2009
Great Room, Not So Great Front Desk
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
Wow ~ the Surf front room was amazing. The waves crash right outside the balcony, and the view can't be beat. However, we were kept waiting 2 hours upon check in. Got there at 4 PM, given drink coupons for the delay and were told that they'd call my cell phone as soon as the room was ready. Two hours later (and $100 in the bar) there was still no call, so I went back to the desk and was told that our room had been ready for at least 90 minutes and asked whether we'd gotten a call. For our trouble I negotiated $50 off the rate for the night and a split of champagne. The next night I went back to the desk to arrange late check out for Sunday and really had to fight for it. I explained that it was only right that we check out 2 hours later since they kept us waiting for two hours on arrival. Finally got that settled and we really enjoyed not checking out until 2 PM. The restaurant there was just okay - overpriced and only worth it for the view and convenience. -Wendy A., from San Diego, United States - 8/28/2009
Weekend at Surf and Sand
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
I thought the staff at valet parking was bad when I arrived, there were no cars waiting and no one to help with bags or car. At the front desk the girl was rude and I paid extra for a room on the 9th floor but did not get it and was not credited any money for my stay, I had a late check out for 4:00 but was locked out of my room At 12:00, and it took 30 min. to get a new key while the cleaning staff waited at my door starting at 3:50 and the front desk calling every 10 min... AC in room did not work, very hot weekend... -Jon Harpole , from NEWHALL, United States - 7/31/2009

Finally...an oceanfront resort in Southern California that really feels like you're at the beach and not just spending a lot of money for a resort that does not feel connected with the actual beach. If you love the sound of the surf and want to watch the sunset right from your own beach front balcony with NOTHING blocking any portion of your view, this is it. WE LOVED IT! -Cathleen, from Los Angeles, United States - 7/6/2009

The ocean view from our room was beautiful and the sounds of the ocean were awesome. The food at Splashes restaurant at the resort was great and the service at the resort in general was outstanding. -Michele Burris , from bakersfield, United States - 6/26/2009
Poor Custumer Service

Very disappointed the way we have been treated. We had late check out reservation however we had been told that we had to leave at 12 noon and they have disconnected the keys while our belongings were in the room. In a very harsh way the manager told us to leave without trying to listen or to help with our concern. -Annie Banjarjian , from pasadena, United States - 6/25/2009

Excellent staff - nice rooms - a bit old - caulking around the bath tubs would have improved it 100% - just looked like mold.
Price was way too high for such an older place. But, the front desk staff were excellent, friendly and extremely helpful - they went out of their way to please and offer info. Appreciated it very much. -Hugh A. "Lee" Girard , from bellaire, United States - 5/25/2009

Amazing Ocean Views...But Time Was Limited
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
I love the Surf & Sand Hotel, but even better, read below: The ocean views & sunsets are spectacular!!!! And, with a few nice bottles of wine & cheese assortment on your balcony, you're set! But, it comes with a price - Not just monetary. It seems that we always have something on our bill at check-out that shouldn't be on there. The front desk is very accommodating about correcting the problem, but it's just the inconvenience. Also, even though we had VIP early check-in @ 12 noon, we didn't get into our room until almost 4 PM! Then, we had VIP late check-out @ 4 PM, but were rushed out because they needed the room for the next guests. They did give us 2-free drinks for the hassles at their bar, but it was the phone calls, and door knocking that bothered me/us on our "10th Wedding Anniversary". I know that the S&S is extremely popular, but they need to iron-out the kinks! If you can over-look that, then a GREAT hotel... -Scott Welkowsky , from Trabuco Canyon, United States - 11/13/2008

A charming hotel with a spectacular location. Staff and service are outstanding. The rooms are very attractive and comfortable yet could use a bit of "freshening up" particularly the shower area and sliding doors to the patio. -Catherine, from San Diego, United States - 11/10/2008
Great Location but Not a Great Hotel
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
The Surf and Sand is located on the beach and across from one of my favorite restaurants, French 75; potentially a perfect setting to celebrate my wife's birthday. When I tried to check-in at 2:00pm I was told the room wouldn't be available until 4:00 and although I had called the day before to request early check-in as was advertised the hotel was booked and I was out of luck for two hours.
When I finally did get my room it took 30 minutes for the hotel to "find" my luggage and then had to call and ask for another key to open the mini bar, the key provided did not work. I had to wait a total of 25 minutes for my car although I had called for it from my room. The room had no air conditioning and a fan that was inadequate to combat the heat of the late afternoon; I had to leave the balcony doors open to keep the room nearly comfortable. Keeping the balcony door open was needed throughout the night, the room never cooled with the doors closed; I know why the hotel supplies ear plugs -Laurence Bourgeois , from N. Tustin, United States - 10/24/2008

Surf and Sand, Too Late of a Check In
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
We did not get into our room until 4:30 and did not get our luggage until almost 5PM. They forgot our hanging luggage and it took us a special trip to reception to find it. The late check-in prevented us from really enjoying our get away weekend. Also, our late check out was at noon, not 4pm like we were hoping would be available. It was not the relaxing getaway we hoped for. -Erica Victorson , from Huntington Beach, United States - 10/7/2008

We have stayed at the Surf & Sand before and loved it then as we do now. The only thing I think could be a plus would be to have another restaurant just so we would never have to leave the hotel.

We just love this resort. It has everything you need. The coffee shop for lattes in the morning, a great place to eat and have drinks called "Splashes" which is right on the water, walk to the little village of Laguna, amazing sound of the waves crashing at your balcony, beautiful pool, friendly staff, nice spa for massages, very clean and relaxing. We got a terrific deal through Perfect Escapes including the free breakfast, valet parking, $75.00 credit daily and a wonderful price on the oceanfront room. We loved it so much we stayed an extra day and can't wait to return. Thanks so much! -Baldev Sangara, from Vancouver, Canada - 5/23/2008

Amazing Stay At the Surf and Sand
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
Let me say straight up, I am THE fussiest traveler. I want absolute luxury, perfect service and a great location but I hate to pay a huge amount for it. I researched for MONTHS where to stay at Laguna Beach as we were staying for almost 2 weeks and it would add up.. Eventually we decided to book the Surf and Sand.
From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding. We actually had a mix up with our airport pickup which the hotel had booked - it was no big deal but meant we ended up getting our own taxi there. Incredibly, the hotel paid for it! The fare was $150 and they didn't hesitate. My husband and I were astounded. The staff were so friendly and welcoming when we arrived - they even upgraded us to an ocean front, corner room on the top floor!
Our time at the Surf and Sand was flawless - the room was gorgeous, the staff were never anything but friendly and helpful and the whole feel of the resort is so relaxing. Cannot fault it, you won't regret it! Fantastic dea -Sheye, from Eatons Hill, Australia - 3/24/2008

The hotel was very nice, our room was upgraded to ocean front. The only downside was the lack of air conditioning. It was a cool weekend but with no cross breeze it was warm in the room. In the summer it would be unbearable. A fan was provided but it was noisy. -Troy Dalke , from Corona, United States - 11/19/2007

I had booked a romantic night for my boyfriend's 40th. We retired to our room at 11pm after dinner and listened to a lot of loud voices coming from the pool until near midnight. We were then woken early to construction noises. This is not how I wanted our romantic morning in bed to be. If I had known I would not have stayed. I got no satisfaction from the receptionist when I mentioned it. I then wrote a letter and received a $100 gift certificate for my next visit. Sadly his 40th is over and cannot be replayed. I wanted the night to be perfect...it wasn't! -Deborah Whelan, from Santa Ana, United States - 10/9/2007
